Starting Secondary School
Making the transition from primary to post-primary school is a significant milestone in a young person’s life. At St Michael’s Community College, we recognise that this step brings both excitement and uncertainty, and we are committed to ensuring that every student feels welcomed, supported and confident from the very beginning.
Our First Year Induction Programme is carefully designed to support students as they settle into their new school environment and begin the next stage of their educational journey. The programme helps students to develop the confidence, independence and organisational skills needed to navigate post-primary school successfully.
We begin this journey each October with our annual Open Night, where parents/guardians and prospective students have the opportunity to experience the atmosphere of the school, meet staff and students, and learn about the wide range of opportunities available at St Michael’s.
At this stage, our planning and support process for students with additional educational needs also begins, as parents/guardians are invited to meet with our Additional Educational Needs team and Inclusion Coordinator to discuss how best we can support their child’s transition to post-primary school.
Later in the school year, all incoming First Year students are invited to attend a dedicated induction morning. This gives students an opportunity to become familiar with the school building, meet key staff members, and begin forming connections with their peers in a relaxed, welcoming and supportive environment.
We understand that not every student may be in a position to attend these events. In such cases, we are very happy to arrange an individual visit to the school. Parents and guardians are warmly encouraged to contact us to arrange an appointment so that we can discuss how best to support their child’s individual needs and ensure a positive start to secondary school.
Application forms and further information are available from the school office.
