Junior Cycle

The Junior Cycle marks the first three years of a student’s post-primary journey, typically from age 12 or 13 through to 15 or 16. In our school, these years are about building confidence, discovering strengths, and setting each student up to succeed.

We place a strong emphasis on high-quality teaching and learning, alongside a deep commitment to care and support. Students are known, encouraged, and challenged to do their best. From the beginning, we work to create a positive learning environment where students feel a sense of belonging and are supported to grow in confidence, independence, and resilience.

The Junior Cycle programme offers a broad and engaging curriculum, with a clear focus on key skills, wellbeing, and meaningful learning experiences. Students have the opportunity to explore a wide range of subjects, helping them to discover their interests and develop a strong foundation for Senior Cycle and beyond.

Assessment and Reporting

Assessment in the Junior Cycle reflects the full breadth of students’ learning and progress.

During second and third year, students complete Classroom-Based Assessments (CBAs), which allow them to demonstrate their learning in practical and creative ways. These assessments support deeper understanding and give students the opportunity to take pride in their work.

At the end of third year, students sit state examinations in their subjects. Their achievements across the three years, including CBAs, ongoing school-based work, and final exams, are recorded in the Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement (JCPA).

The Junior Cycle was designed with the redevelopment of Senior Cycle in mind. By focusing on key skills, active learning, and a broader approach to assessment, students are well prepared for the evolving Senior Cycle and the demands of learning beyond school. Our students leave Junior Cycle as confident learners, well prepared for the next stage of their education.
