Supporting students to feel safe, settled, and able to learn
At St Michael’s, we place a strong emphasis on ensuring that every student feels supported, understood, and able to take part fully in school life.
Our Student Support Team brings together key staff who work collaboratively to support students’ wellbeing, engagement, and overall experience of school. This ensures that support is not left to chance, but is planned, coordinated, and responsive.
A coordinated, whole-school approach
The Student Support Team is central to how we organise student care and support in our school.
It allows us to:
- bring together the experience and insight of staff
- respond early when concerns arise
- plan appropriate supports
- review and adjust supports over time
This reflects a whole-school approach to wellbeing, where all students are supported, and additional care is provided when needed.
Supporting students at different levels
Support in St Michael’s is responsive and flexible, depending on need.
- For all students: A positive school environment, strong relationships, and a focus on wellbeing and belonging
- For some students: Additional supports such as mentoring, check-ins, or small group support
- For a few students: More individualised support, with careful planning and regular review
This ensures that students receive the right support at the right time.
How the team works
The Student Support Team meets regularly to:
- share relevant information in a professional and respectful way
- identify students who may need additional support
- agree appropriate responses
- monitor progress and adjust supports where needed
The team includes members of school leadership, Year Heads, the Guidance Counsellor, and other key staff involved in student care and support. Where appropriate, we also work closely with parents to ensure a joined-up approach.
Working with parents
We value the role of parents and guardians as partners in supporting students. Where concerns arise, we aim to:
- communicate early and clearly
- listen carefully to parents’ insights
- agree practical and supportive steps
- maintain ongoing contact as supports are put in place
Our approach is always respectful, supportive, and focused on helping the student move forward.
For students
If you are finding something difficult ,whether it is schoolwork, friendships, or how you are feeling, you are not on your own.
There are always people in the school who will listen and help. You can speak to:
- your Year Head
- a trusted teacher
- the Guidance Counsellor
- the Principal or Deputy Principal
Our doors are always open. Support is there to help you find your way forward.
Our approach
Students learn best when they feel safe, supported, and understood. Our role is to notice when something is not quite right, to respond early, and to put the right supports in place so that every student can engage fully in school life. We welcome input and requests form parents, who are often to first ot notice that something is not quite right.
