The Students

The Students

At St Michael's Community College, our students are at the heart of everything we do. They arrive from communities across West Clare bringing energy, curiosity, enthusiasm, and character. They are idealistic, engaged, and full of ideas. Some may, on occasion, arrive tired and less engaged, occasionally uncertain that a rule does not apply to them, and capable of losing a school journal in ways that defy explanation. They are, in other words, teenagers, and we would not have it any other way.

Our students are known here as individuals, not just as learners, and that matters to us. We want them to grow in confidence, to develop a strong sense of who they are, and to leave St Michael's as respectful, capable, and independent young people ready to make their mark.

Students in St Michael's are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, to respect themselves and those around them, to engage with each other and to play an active part in school life. These are not just expectations; they reflect the kind of community our students themselves help to build each day.

Student Voice

We listen to our students. We want them to feel heard, respected, and confident in sharing their views and ideas. When students know that their voice matters, they engage more fully, contribute more freely, and develop a genuine sense of belonging and ownership in their school. That is exactly the kind of culture we are working to build together.

Student Council

The Student Council gives students a structured and meaningful way to represent their peers and shape the ongoing life of the school. Council members work in real partnership with management and staff. Their perspectives are genuinely sought and genuinely considered. It is a space where students develop confidence, leadership, communication, and the ability to work well with others.

Student Councils are provided for under Section 27 of the Education Act 1998, and their value is well established in Irish second-level schools.
