Transition Year

Transition Year

Transition Year is a one year programme between Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle. It is also, for many students, one of the most memorable years of their post-primary education.

The year offers something genuinely different: a step back from examination pressure, and a step forward into a broader, more varied experience of learning. It is a year to develop confidence, to discover new interests, to grow in maturity and independence and to arrive at Senior Cycle better prepared, more self-aware, and clearer about where they are headed.

We are aware that Transition Year is not without its sceptics. Our experience is that the students who engage with it honestly, who commit to the work experience, take the modules seriously, and allow themselves to be stretched, consistently find it worthwhile. The evidence, nationally and in our own school, is clear: students who complete Transition Year tend to perform better in their Leaving Certificate and manage the demands of Senior Cycle with greater confidence.

What the Year Involves

Our programme is built around four areas of student development, aligned with the national Transition Year Programme Statement:

Personal Growth: building confidence, resilience and self-awareness.

Being a Learner: developing the study skills, organisation and independence that Senior Cycle demands.

Civic and Community Engagement: understanding what it means to contribute, and to take responsibility beyond the classroom.

Career Exploration: beginning to make sense of future pathways through real experience and honest guidance.

Our Programme

Students continue with core subjects, English, Mathematics, Gaeilge and French, maintaining academic continuity into Senior Cycle. Alongside this, they experience a wide range of subjects to help inform their Leaving Certificate choices.

The TY programme at St Michael's also includes:

Enterprise and mini-company; digital literacy and e-portfolio; first aid, manual handling and personal safety; outdoor education and physical challenge; leadership and coaching programmes; and community and social engagement. These experiences are chosen in order to develop real skills and broaden students' sense of what they are capable of.

Work Experience

Work experience is a cornerstone of the year. Students complete structured placements supported by preparation, reflection and evaluation. For many, it is the first sustained encounter with the world of work and is a high impact experience the develops confidence and resilience.

Learning and Assessment

Assessment in Transition Year focuses on progress and engagement rather than high-stakes examinations. Students build a digital portfolio recording their work and achievements, receive regular feedback, and are recognised through a credit-based system that values effort and participation. Reports are issued to parents throughout the year.

Educational Visits and Guest Speakers

A wide range of trips, workshops and guest speakers complement the programme, providing real-world context and broadening students' perspectives beyond the classroom.
